Trading + Currency Exchange

The Currency exchange + adjacent boards host peer-to-peer BTC ↔ fiat and BTC ↔ altcoin trades. P2P trading on the forum is unregulated, mostly safe with the right protocol, and remains useful for people who can't or won't use centralized exchanges.

When P2P is useful

  • Privacy-preferring users avoiding KYC
  • Users in countries with limited or banned centralized exchange access
  • Trading less-listed altcoins
  • Larger transactions where exchange limits or KYC delays are friction
  • Cash transactions (in-person meetings, prepaid cards, etc.)

P2P trade protocol

  1. Public offer thread or specific responsive trade thread
  2. Negotiate via PM but confirm key terms publicly
  3. Agree on escrow agent for non-trivial amounts
  4. Settle the fiat leg first (reversible side first when possible)
  5. Settle the BTC leg second (irreversible side second)
  6. Both parties leave trust feedback

The reversibility rule

The most important rule:

Send the irreversible leg LAST.

  • BTC → irreversible
  • Bank transfer → reversible in some banks for hours/days
  • PayPal → reversible for weeks
  • Credit card → reversible for months
  • Cash in hand → irreversible

If you send BTC first to a "trustworthy" counterparty who then chargesback the fiat, you have no recourse. This is the most common P2P scam.

Verifying fiat settlement

For bank transfers:

  • Wait for funds to actually clear (not just "pending")
  • Some banks show "received" but can claw back for days
  • For large amounts: wait 3–7 business days OR use escrow

For PayPal: never accept for BTC sales unless you're willing to lose the BTC

For cash in person:

  • Meet in public locations (bank lobbies are ideal)
  • Bring a counterfeit-detection pen for large bills
  • Bring a friend
  • Bring a second phone for backup recording

Altcoin swaps

Swapping BTC for altcoins via P2P has additional risks:

  • Altcoin chain may have different finality (be patient on confirmations)
  • Some altcoin chains can be reorged (Bitcoin-to-Monero or vice versa is among the safer swaps)
  • Always use escrow with explicit altcoin terms

What "escrow" means for altcoin trades

Escrow agent receives the BTC + the altcoin, releases both legs once both arrive. Some agents specialize in cross-chain escrows; their fees are slightly higher.

Regulatory awareness

P2P trading triggers reporting / licensing requirements in many jurisdictions, especially above certain volumes. This is your responsibility. Know your local rules before scaling P2P activity.
